Hello! my name is Richard and I am a BACP registered counsellor and psychotherapist licensed in the United Kingdom. I have 5+ years experience of providing counselling and psychotherapy along with 3+ years experience of my own personal therapy as a client. I have also previously worked in mental health management and I have represented various mental health charities and trusts.
I work one to one with adults with a wide range of concerns including but not limited to; family and relationship issues, working through guilt and grief, issues around mood, sadness, depression and anxiety. I have further assisted people who have wanted to work on specific life challenges and changes, issues around self confidence and their desire for self improvement.
I have worked with many people who have experienced historical trauma and issues around abuse and I spent a considerable amount of time during my training working with eating disorders. I also like working with what is called the 'four givens of existence', these are; mortality, freedom and responsibility, existential isolation and the meaning / meaninglessness of life. I believe these are pivotal in assisting you to confront what is interfering and mentally 'blocking' you from moving forward with your life.
Therapy is a unique relationship that enables a process of looking at the power of your past on the emotions of today. I practice psychodynamic therapy which is a reflective therapy that is based on the idea that many adult patterns of behaviour are related to negative early childhood experiences. These experiences cause patterns of distorted thinking and beliefs that may have been understandable in childhood, but do not work in adult life. The goal of therapy is to explore these distortions, understand how they arose, and find effective ways to overcome their influence on your thinking and behaviour through reflective dialogue.
In therapy, I believe the difficulties you are experiencing are because deep down you already know that you have something that is struggling to emerge and I will tailor our dialogue and treatment plan to meet your personal and specific needs considering what you want and don't want to achieve from therapy. In therapy, the work comes from you and I believe what you put into therapy is in proportion to what you will get out of therapy. I believe 100% that what you most need will be found where you least want to look. It takes courage to seek a more fulfilling, meaningful and happier life and to have the will to want a better relationship with yourself and others. I am here to support and empower you throughout your journey.
I help to mobilise your growth by providing a confidential environment for you to feel listened to, validated and supported. My therapy style is compassionate and tailored to your individual needs through focusing on your feelings and hearing the words you use to describe yourself and your life. My approach is a combination of psychodynamic (so we will be considering your younger years) and psychosynthesis which includes a transpersonal and spiritual nature to our work that helps to facilitate your personal growth and psychological development through the use of symbolic detail, work with sub-personalities and there may be some dream work and guided visualisation exercises if appropriate. It is a soulful, creative and sometimes educational approach that is effective in helping you to understand emotional boundaries, so you don't have to own the issues of other people, helping you to understand yourself on a deeper level and helping you to find meaning in your life.
I look forward to working with you!
Richard Cox, Reg, MBACP
“As you are shifting, you will begin to realize that you are not the same person you used to be. The things you used to tolerate have become intolerable. Where you once remained quiet, you are now speaking your truth. Where you once battled and argued, you are now choosing to remain silent. You are beginning to understand the value of your voice and your presence. There are some situations that no longer deserve your time, energy, and focus.”
“To work in the dark, you must be able to hold your own light, and still be intimate with the darkness" ― Thomas Lloyd Qualls
